For the third consecutive year, the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) is putting the spotlight on safe and healthy working conditions with its Healthy Workplaces Film Award. Entries to the award are now open, with a prize fund of 8,000 Euro at stake for the best documentary on work-related topics. The winner will be announced at the International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film (DOK Leipzig) in October.

The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) has just announced the winner of the photography competition focussing on safety and health at work. Christopher Azzopardi from Malta was awarded with the 1st prize for his photograph entitled “Beekeeper” at the European Summit on Risk Assessment and SMEs in Bilbao, the closing event of the Healthy Workplaces Campaign.

The importance of risk assessment in the workplace, especially in small and medium-sized enterprises, will be the focus of a high-profile event being held in Bilbao, Spain, on 17 November 2009. Organised by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) and the Swedish EU Presidency, the summit marks the close of the Healthy Workplaces Campaign on risk assessment, which for the last two years has been promoting practical ways in which workplace risks can be managed and reduced.

“With better risk assessment practices, we can prevent many workplace accidents that occur every day all around Europe”, says Dr Jukka Takala, Director of the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA). As part of the bi-annual Healthy Workplaces Campaign on risk assessment, the European Week for Safety and Health at Work runs from 19 to 23 October and is organised by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) and its partners. The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) has just released the results of a Europe-wide opinion poll on safety and health at work. According to the findings, there is widespread concern among European citizens that the current economic crisis could adversely affect health and safety at work, putting at risk the improvements that they report having seen over the last five years. Many Europeans also feel well informed about occupational safety and health and consider it an important factor when choosing a new job.

The closing date for the pan-European photography competition organised by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) is fast approaching. Based on safe and healthy workplaces, final entries can still be submitted up until 15th August 2009. The competition has so far attracted significant interest from citizens across the European Union with over 500 entries to date.

Eight organisations and companies were honoured with an award at the ninth annual European Good Practice competition organised by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA). The awards form part of the Healthy Workplaces campaign on risk assessment. The award winners and commended entries all promoted good safety and health practices in workplace risk assessment. A new booklet published today showcases the good practice initiatives they have implemented.
