- OSH in figures: Occupational safety and health in the transport sector — an overview
- The transport sector is one of the growing sectors in the European economy and highly affected by change: a growing proportion of women, migrant and part-time workers, rapid ageing of the workforce and many technological innovations. Transport workers are exposed to multiple physical risks, suffer violence, and many have unusual working times and repetitive and monotonous work. The consequences are high accident rates, musculoskeletal disorders, stress and fatigue. This report reviews the OSH risks of a wide variety of transport occupations, by analysing statistics and studies, and through selected case examples of prevention. The report has a broad scope: it covers all transport subsectors (rail, water, air and road) and is intended for both those working in the sector and policymakers.
- E-fact 55: Safe maintenance of fishing vessels
- Maintenance of fishing vessels includes surveys and repairs in dry-dock undertaken by ship yard workers and contractors as well as minor and routine repairs undertaken by ship’s crew at sea or in wet dock. Emergency repairs carried out at sea are particularly risky, due to possible adverse weather conditions, the need to complete the repairs quickly, the lack of adequate tools or equipment, or the lack of necessary skills. This e-fact provides information on the hazards associated with maintenance of fishing vessels and summarises the essential principles to assure safe and effective maintenance operations on board fishing vessels and contains some recommendations for preventive measures to control the risks during those operations.

Access to summary in all EU languages - THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN THE FISHERIES SECTOR
-
The purpose of the study was to address two interlinked community priorities : the promotion of social and economic cohesion, particularly through lessening the developmental differentials between regions and the promotion of equal opportunities and rights for men and women.
Key areas covered:
• Employment data, including gender differentials, for each main discrete occupation within the fisheries sector i.e.: fishing, aquaculture, marketing & distribution, processing, administration & management and informal (especially unpaid spouses support).
• Legal and social status; women’s legal position concerning involvement in the sector, and problems inherent in this.
• Organisational, concerning how women are organised within the industry (e.g. unions), what formal support systems there are (e.g. childcare) and how education serves women in the sector.
• Socio-cultural constraints, resolved into three aspects – external social factors that effect women’s decisions, the social status (thus desirability) of fisheries occupations and “internal” psychological factors related to women’s interests, aspirations and concerns.
• Economic, mainly concerned with the respective earnings for various fisheries occupations, and particularly with gender related earnings discounts and economic alternatives.
Key Findings
It was a surprise to find that, for all the cultural and economic diversity within the EU, the position and perception of women regarding the fisheries sector showed a considerable degree of commonality.

The report highlights the main issues and aims to provide a well-founded evidence base, helping policy makers, actors at enterprise and sector level, as well as researchers and those who record, prevent and compensate occupational diseases in the European Union to set the agenda for the next years.
