Throughout the year, we will be publishing a range of information products and articles on our website as well as passing the message on at public events and conferences.
- Promoting active ageing in the workplace
- The European Year of Active Ageing 2012 aims to promote the quality of life and well-being of the European population, especially older people, and to promote solidarity between the generations. A good working life is an important platform to promote active ageing. Therefore, occupational health and safety plays a crucial role in securing active ageing through a better and longer work life. Good work also promotes cooperation between young, middle-aged and older generations.

The German Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) has just published a brochure on how to tackle stress and overload linked to frequent interruptions and the demand for multitasking. The brochure is one of the outcomes of a project that attempted to identify good working practices to support an ageing working population.

The Danish national return-to-work (RTW) program aims to improve the management of municipal sickness benefit in Denmark. A study is currently ongoing to evaluate the RTW program. The program includes 21 municipalities with about 19 500 working-age adults on long-term sickness absence, regardless of reason for sickness absence or employment status.

To mark and promote the 2012 European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations, EuroHealthNet has just launched its new website.
By showcasing practical examples of health promotion interventions, identifying initiatives in the European Union and key resources about healthy ageing, the website expects to build awareness of the steps required to make healthy ageing a reality and contribute towards a successful EY 2012.

Workplace age discrimination is the most widespread form of age discrimination with one in five citizens having personally experienced or witnessed it. This is a finding of a new Eurobarometer survey presented by the Commission to mark the start of the 2012 European Year of Active Ageing and Solidarity of Generations.

This report reviews the health and work of older women. It explores the risk facing older women, such as musculoskeletal problems at work and provides recommendations for changes at the workplace.

- Summary - New risks and trends in the safety and health of women at work
- In 2009 and 2010, the Agency commissioned an update to its previous research on gender issues at work , which found that inequality both inside and outside the workplace can have an effect on the health and safety of women at work. This summary provides a policy perspective and is meant to contribute to the task outlined by the European strategy on health and safety at work for EU-OSHA’s European Risk Observatory, “examining the specific challenges in terms of health and safety posed by the more extensive integration of women in the labour market”. It provides a statistical overview of the trends in employment and working conditions, hazard exposure and work-related accidents and health problems for women at work. It explores selected issues (combined exposures, occupational cancer, access to rehabilitation, women and informal work, and “emerging” female professions such as home care and domestic work). The research highlights the type of work carried out by women, issues faced by younger and older women, the growth of the service sector, violence and harassment, and increasingly diversified working time patterns as major risk factors.

The Committee of the Regions, AGE Platform Europe and the European Commission have issued a brochure presenting EU funding possibilities for regional and local initiatives to promote active ageing and solidarity between generations. The brochure aims to make a particular contribution to the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations 2012.

France has an integrated national action plan on cancer that addresses public, environmental and occupational health issues jointly. Is is planned to be applied in synergy with the national action plan on health and work (plan national santé travail). Regular reports provides summary information about activities and results. Mention is also made of complementary reports providing more detailed information on the activities, legislative acts and guidance documents.
